In many therapies, the healthcare professional is the ‘expert’ who does their best to ‘fix’ their patient. They draw from a one-dimensional science, create a plausible diagnosis, and apply a technique to cure the ill. What fascinates Roger is that Myofascial Release is none of these things. In the case of myofascial release, the professional is there simply to initiate and facilitate body’s innate self-corrective mechanism. Roger finds that the process is so natural and powerful, that once you feel an authentic release for the first time, you would never revert to the other way of doing things. Patients truly ‘fix’ themselves with a little bit of guidance. The body knows exactly how to releases tightness and restriction given the right conditions. Not only is this less pressure on the professional, the results are exponentially better.

Given the patients’ participatory role in treatment, it is less about Roger’s necessary qualifications (expert level John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach™ and an assistant instructor), or his relevant experience (a decade in private practice treating all sorts of presentations), it’s more about Roger being someone who can hold the space, and give you courage and support you through the healing process.

Roger has always wanted to help people. On one long bus trip in college after visiting Joni, Roger read the book “Healing Ancient Wounds” by John F. Barnes PT in entirety. It explored the role of emotions, the mind-body connection, and many of the questions left unanswered in his psychology training. The book also represented the missing link in the treatment of the whole person; body, mind and spirit. Working closely with John F. Barnes at seminars is an immense privilege, and his influence and mentorship is a daily inspiration.
